  16. <p>Love and marriage will be dangerous sports, a humorist predicts
  17. </p>

  20. <p>    The next century will be a time of many informational
  21. breakthroughs. Most notably, the battle between the sexes will
  22. take on a new complexion because it will be scientifically
  23. documented that men and women are completely different species
  24. of animals (not unlike, say, hyenas and pumas, although there
  25. will be a lot of heated arguments about who gets to be the
  26. pumas).

  28. <p>    Once everyone accepts that we're speaking different
  29. languages, a computer system will be developed that allows
  30. instantaneous intersexual communication to occur. For the first
  31. time, certain simple but formerly bewildering transactions will
  32. become clear. At the end of an evening out, when the single man
  33. of the future says to his date, "I had a nice time. I'll call
  34. you" (I predict that men will still be using this line), the
  35. woman to whom he is speaking will immediately hear in her
  36. headset: "What he means is that while he thinks you are
  37. attractive, he's concerned that you already have expectations of
  38. him that he will never be able to meet. He's associating you
  39. with his needy, castrating mother because she had the same hair
  40. color as yours."
  41. </p>
  42. <p>    By this time, sex and dating will be so dangerous (owing to
  43. the numerous rampant communicable diseases and personality
  44. disorders) that they will be attempted only by the kind of
  45. thrill seekers who now do things like bungee jumping, sky
  46. surfing and eating at Denny's. By the year 2020, in fact,
  47. "casual dating" will be a popular arena sport. People too
  48. terrified to pursue something so hazardous themselves will
  49. witness actual live human beings who, for big money stakes,
  50. will eat dinner with and then perhaps (if dinner goes well)
  51. become intimate with people they are attracted to but basically
  52. know nothing about.
  53. </p>
  54. <p>    Because the average person will be far too cautious to risk
  55. even a single totally worthless encounter, we will see the
  56. transformation of the medical clinic into a kind of after-hours
  57. meeting place where nervous but lonely people will be able to
  58. undergo a battery of health tests and, while awaiting the
  59. results, stop by the bar to enjoy a trendy snack with others
  60. who may have the same ailment. (I predict that honey-roasted
  61. songbirds will be the snack of choice by then because they will
  62. turn out to be the last remaining edible creature that is
  63. domestically plentiful, low in fat and still has not been made
  64. into a trendy snack item.)
  65. </p>
  66. <p>    All of this escalating terror will, oddly, increase the
  67. number of marriages taking place, even though we will see the
  68. divorce rate rise from 1 in 2 marriages to 2 in 2. These
  69. alarming statistics will cause the birth of a new nuptial
  70. tradition. Savvy couples will create the most intimate bond two
  71. people can share by agreeing to get married and divorced
  72. simultaneously. At that point, they will possess so much file
  73. data about each other that they will negotiate in advance the
  74. terms of every day they plan to spend together, deciding what
  75. annoying habits they are willing to tolerate and, more
  76. important, what personal details each one will permit the other
  77. to use either in court or in the eventual tell-all book.
  78. "Looking at me cross-eyed" could emerge as the most common
  79. charge of misconduct in the personal nuisance suits that will
  80. clog the legal system.
  81. </p>
  82. <p>    Playing right into that will be the amount of specific
  83. evidence people will have accumulated about each other as
  84. "compulsive video documentation" becomes the most common new
  85. addiction. By the year 2010, TV networks will decide to give
  86. all video-equipment owners a shot at their own show as long as
  87. they promise to supply footage that is extremely disturbing.
  88. Recorded evidence of violence and malicious mayhem will draw
  89. such astronomical sums that criminals contemplating an illegal
  90. activity will consult with movie developers during the
  91. important planning stages of the crime. They will thus make sure
  92. that the approach they are taking with regard to plot and
  93. details is the one that will have the best eventual effect on
  94. sales figures and marketing potential.
  95. </p>
  96. <p>    This blurring of the line between life and entertainment
  97. will culminate in a scandal when a giant underground facility is
  98. discovered in the Midwest that is being used as a breeding lab
  99. by desperate talk-show producers who have been completely out
  100. of new guests since the mid-1990s. It will be discovered that
  101. the producers have been assembling affable humanoids from the
  102. fat, tissue, bone and spare parts of celebrities who have
  103. undergone a lot of plastic surgery, training the "guests" to
  104. cultivate zany or inappropriate hobbies and schooling them in
  105. how to tell 10 different 15-minute anecdotes about themselves.
  106. This will constitute their entire life-span, after which they
  107. will be melted down and reworked for an additional booking.
  108. </p>
  109. <p>    Yes, it's going to be a bold new world, full of brand new
  110. dysfunctions, addictions and disorders: a million new things to
  111. worry about! But that's progress.
